MUMBAI: A new chapter began for the Maharashtra Police Force on Saturday, January 3, 2026, as senior IPS officer Sadanand Date officially took charge as the Director General of Police (DGP). A highly decorated officer from the 1990 batch, Date succeeds Rashmi Shukla, the state’s first woman DGP, following the completion of her tenure.
A Legacy of Bravery: The Hero of 26/11
Sadanand Date is widely respected as one of India’s most disciplined and courageous officers. He is best known for his heroic role during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. While posted as an Additional Commissioner, he fought terrorists at Cama Hospital, sustaining injuries while saving lives. For his conspicuous bravery, he was awarded the President’s Police Medal.
Before his appointment as the state’s top cop, he was on central deputation serving as the Chief of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

- Mumbai Police: Held vital roles as Joint Commissioner (Law & Order) and in the Crime Branch.

The appointment comes after the retirement of Rashmi Shukla on January 3, 2026. As per the established norms, Sadanand Date will have a fixed two-year tenure as the DGP of Maharashtra. His vast experience in both state and central agencies is expected to significantly bolster the state’s security apparatus and administrative transparency.
